ADHD conference in September 2006

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

Following our ADHD conference in September 2006, here are the views, as parents of a couple of attendees

“We recently attended the excellently planned and coordinated ADHD workshop at the Kingston Centre in Stafford and came home with a neck-ache. WHY?…. Because listening to the guest speaker Alan Roberts, we were both nodding our heads in agreement…..Hooray! It’s not just our child who has poor organisational skills, is messy, constantly interrupts, has to have the last word, is impulsive, loses things (including his temper) and has few friends.

Having already attended Lighthouse meetings, we know we are not on our own – there are other families who are affected in many ways by ADHD – but what the workshops enabled us to do was learn some coping strategies both for us and our child. We have been practicing some of these and plan to try others.

We were only able to attend three out of the twelve workshops, but found that some of the other topics have been discussed at Lighthouse meetings and more are planned.

For the future, we would love to see this sort of event held for school teachers as an inset day, which would hopefully stop such comments as:

‘ADHD is just an excuse for being lazy’ …… and that from one of our child’s teachers!

After viewing their stall, we have also arranged a visit with the fire service who were especially open to helping children with ADHD.

We know from talking to other parents, that support is needed by them, so do come along to the Lighthouse meetings.

(Our child now wears his ‘I’m not naughty, I’ve got ADHD’ T-Shirt with pride.).
